About the Artist

For more than fifty years, master bird carver Jim Durow has devoted his career to capturing the elegance and vitality of avian life in wood. His artistic journey began in 1974 under the guidance of his father, with whom he carved more than twenty‑five bird species. This early collaboration instilled a deep respect for the natural world and laid the foundation for his lifelong passion for avian artistry.
In 1987, Jim established Wooden Feather Carving Studio and emerged as a solo artist. His work reflects a rare convergence of imagination, inherited wisdom, and meticulous craftsmanship—qualities that continue to define his artistic identity.
Jim quickly earned national recognition. His sculptures, celebrated for their precision and lifelike presence, have received numerous honors, including the General Motors Award of Excellence. Today, he is regarded as one of the leading bird‑carving artists in the United States, with pieces represented in galleries, museums, and private collections around the world.
Working exclusively on commission, Jim engages clients in a collaborative process he calls Avian Artistry. Each sculpture begins as a single block of wood and evolves into a meticulously rendered form that captures not only anatomical accuracy but also the essence and character of the species portrayed.
His ability to infuse life into wood has made his work highly sought after. The detail, the realism, and the quiet poetry of each carving remain unmatched. In Jim’s hands, the magic becomes wing, and the artistry takes flight.
